Measuring your dog for their new collar, harness, jacket or sweater

Measuring for Collars:

Measure
Neck Girth
: Using a flexible tape measure, wrap it
around your dog's neck where the collar will sit. Ensure you can
comfortably fit two fingers between the tape and your dog's neck. This
measurement is your dog's neck girth.

Consider
Collar Width
: Depending on the collar style, you
might need to measure for width as well. Wider collars can provide more
comfort and support for larger dogs.

Measuring for Harnesses:

Neck
and Chest Girth
: Measure your dog's neck girth as you
would for a collar. Then, measure the widest part of your dog's chest,
typically just behind the front legs. Ensure the tape is snug but not
tight.

Back
Length
: Some harnesses may require measuring
the length from the base of the neck to the base of the tail. This ensures
a proper fit without impeding movement.

Measuring for Coats and Jackets:

Neck
and Chest Girth
: Follow the same neck and chest girth
measurement as for harnesses. This helps secure the coat without
constricting your dog.

Back
Length
: Measure from the base of the neck to
the base of the tail along your dog's spine. This determines the coat's
length.

Consider
Leg Openings
: For coats with leg openings, measure
the circumference of your dog's legs where the openings will sit. Make
sure it's not too tight to avoid discomfort.

Measuring for Sweaters and Fleeces:

Neck
Girth
: Measure your dog's neck girth just as
you would for collars and harnesses.

Chest
Girth
: Measure the widest part of the chest
behind the front legs, ensuring a snug but comfortable fit.

Back
Length
: Measure from the base of the neck to
the base of the tail, similar to measuring for coats and jackets.

Consider
Leg Length
: If the sweater or fleece has leg
openings, measure the length from the neck to the desired leg opening to
ensure a proper fit.

Measuring for Base Layers or Pyjamas:

Neck
Girth
: Measure your dog's neck girth to
determine the appropriate size for the neck opening.

Chest
Girth
: Measure the chest behind the front legs
to ensure the base layer is snug but not restrictive.

Back
Length
: Measure from the base of the neck to
the base of the tail for overall length.

Leg
Length
: If the base layer has leg openings,
measure the length from the neck to the desired leg opening.

Always refer to the manufacturer's size charts
and guidelines for the specific clothing brand you're purchasing, as sizing can
vary between brands. When in doubt, opt for a slightly larger size to ensure
your dog's comfort and freedom of movement.

When should I begin putting extra layers on my dog to keep them warm in the colder months?

Temperature
Drops Below Freezing (32°F/0°C):

Cold-Weather
Breeds
: Dogs bred for colder climates, like
Huskies or Malamutes, can generally tolerate colder temperatures without
extra clothing. However, they might still benefit from added warmth in
extreme cold and will generally benefit from boots in icy and snowy conditions
to protect their paws or a waterproof jacket in wet weather to prevent
them getting a chill and also to allow for quicker drying times when they
come back inside.

Small
Breeds
: Smaller dogs, like Chihuahuas or
Dachshunds, are more susceptible to cold due to their size and proximity
to the ground. When temperatures reach 7 Decrees Centigrade, consider a
sweater or coat, especially for short-haired breeds.

Sub-Freezing
Temperatures (-20°F to 32°F / -29°C to 0°C):

All
Breeds
: In these frigid conditions, most dogs,
regardless of breed, can benefit from extra warmth. Short-haired breeds
may require thicker, insulated coats or jackets and even the layering of
thermal fleeces or base layer under your dogs coat or jacket to keep out
draughts and chills.

Elderly
Dogs
: Older dogs may struggle to regulate
body temperature, so providing extra insulation in the form of clothing is
essential to keep them warm.

Extreme
Cold (-20°F/-29°C or Lower):

All
Dogs
: In extreme cold, it's critical to
outfit all dogs with insulated coats or jackets, regardless of breed.
Frostbite and hypothermia can pose serious risks, even for cold-weather
breeds.

Puppies:
Puppies have less body fat and are more susceptible to cold, so extra
warmth is vital in sub-zero temperatures.

Factors to
Consider:

Age:
Puppies and senior dogs are more vulnerable to temperature extremes, so
they may need clothing earlier and more often.

Health: Dogs
with certain health conditions, such as arthritis or low body fat, require
added protection from the cold.

Activity
Level
: Dogs that spend a lot of time outdoors
or have high activity levels generate more body heat and may not need
clothing as soon as less active dogs.

Size:
Smaller dogs lose heat more quickly due to their size, making them
candidates for clothing sooner.

Coat
Length
: Short-haired breeds or those with thin
fur may need clothing sooner than dogs with thick, insulating fur.

Always observe your dog's behaviour. If
they're shivering, seeking warmth indoors, or showing signs of discomfort in
cold weather, it's time to invest in appropriate clothing to keep them cozy and
safe. Keep in mind that individual tolerance to cold can vary, so adjusting
based on your dog's comfort level is essential.

How do I know if my dog is comfortable wearing their jacket, sweater or harness?

Knowing whether your dog is comfortable
wearing a jacket, sweater, or harness is essential for their well-being and
happiness. Here's a description of how a dog owner can determine their dog's
comfort level:

Observe
Body Language:

Relaxed
Posture
: A comfortable dog will generally have a
relaxed body posture. They won't be excessively tense or rigid while
wearing the clothing.

Natural
Movement
: Watch for natural movement. Your dog
should be able to walk, run, sit, and lie down without restrictions or
awkwardness.

Tail
Wagging
: A happy and comfortable dog may wag
their tail as usual, indicating they're not feeling stressed or
constrained.

Normal
Behavior
: Look for signs that your dog's behavior
remains unchanged. They should engage in regular activities, play, and
interact with you as usual.

Check for
Physical Comfort:

Proper
Fit
: Ensure the clothing fits well. It shouldn't be too tight, causing
discomfort, or too loose, risking entanglement. Follow sizing guidelines
and adjust as needed.

Chafing
or Rubbing
: Examine your dog's skin for any signs
of chafing, redness, or irritation. These are indications that the
clothing may not be comfortable.

Ease
of Breathing
: Listen for normal breathing sounds. If
your dog is struggling to breathe or seems to pant excessively, the
clothing may be too constricting.

Monitor
Behavior Over Time:

Gradual
Introduction
: Introduce the clothing gradually. Allow
your dog to get used to it for short periods initially, then gradually
increase the duration.

Behavioral
Changes
: Pay attention to any behavioral
changes. If your dog becomes anxious, agitated, or exhibits unusual
behavior, they may not be comfortable.

Temperature
Response
: In cold weather, observe whether your
dog appears warmer and more at ease when wearing the clothing. In hot
weather, ensure they don't show signs of overheating.

Seek
Feedback:

Vocalization: If
your dog is uncomfortable, they may whine, bark, or vocalize to express
their distress. Listen for such cues.

Consult
a Professional
: If you're uncertain about your dog's
comfort or if they show signs of distress, consult a veterinarian or
professional dog trainer for guidance.

Remember that every dog is unique, and what
works for one may not work for another. Be patient, and prioritize your dog's
comfort and well-being. If your dog consistently shows signs of discomfort
while wearing clothing, consider alternative options or consult a professional
for advice.

What if my dog hates wearing clothes?

Introducing your dog to wearing clothing like
jackets, sweaters, or life jackets can be a positive experience with a bit of
patience and understanding. Here's how to address and manage any behavioral
issues that may arise:

1. Start
Slowly and Gradually:

Begin
with short sessions: Initially, let your dog wear the clothing for brief
periods indoors. This allows them to get used to the feeling without
overwhelming them.

2. Choose
Comfortable Clothing:

Ensure
proper fit: Select clothing that fits well and is comfortable for your
dog. Avoid items that are too tight or restrictive.

3. Use
Positive Reinforcement:

Treats
and praise: Reward your dog with treats and praise when they wear the
clothing without fuss. This positive association helps them see it as a
good thing.

4. Observe
and Address Discomfort:

Watch
for signs: Pay attention to your dog's body language. If they show signs
of discomfort (e.g., excessive scratching, pacing, or whining), remove the
clothing immediately.

Check
for irritation: Ensure there are no tags, seams, or fasteners causing
discomfort or chafing. Opt for clothing with soft, non-irritating
materials.

5. Gradual
Exposure to Activities:

Practice
during activities: Once your dog is comfortable indoors, gradually
introduce the clothing during their regular activities, such as walks or
playtime.

6.
Associate Clothing with Fun:

Playtime
and treats: Incorporate play and treats while your dog is wearing the
clothing to create a positive connection between the two.

7.
Consistency is Key:

Be
patient: Understand that it may take time for your dog to fully adapt.
Consistent, gentle training and reassurance go a long way.

8. Seek
Professional Help:

Consult
a professional: If your dog continues to struggle with clothing and
exhibits severe behavioural issues, consider seeking guidance from a
professional dog trainer or behaviourist.

Remember that not all dogs will take to
clothing immediately, and some may never be comfortable with it. Always
prioritize your dog's comfort and well-being. If clothing causes excessive
stress or discomfort, it may be best to explore alternative ways to keep your
pup warm or safe, such as adjusting the environment or using different gear.

How do I care for my dogs new Item of clothing?

To ensure your dog's clothing stays clean and
cozy, follow these simple care instructions:

Machine
Washable (Cool Setting):

Most
of our dog clothing items are machine washable. Use a gentle cycle with
cold water to preserve their quality.

Zip up
jackets and secure fasteners to prevent tangling.

Use a
mild detergent, free from harsh chemicals or bleach.

Avoid
using fabric softeners, as they can reduce the effectiveness of certain
materials.

Hang
or lay flat to air dry, avoiding direct sunlight or high heat, which can
damage fabrics and cause shrinkage.

Hand Wash
and Spot Cleaning:

For
items that require handwashing or spot cleaning, use a mild detergent and
lukewarm water.

Gently
scrub soiled areas with a soft brush or cloth.

Rinse
thoroughly and blot excess moisture with a clean towel.

Allow
the clothing to air dry completely before storing or using again.

Taking good care of your dog's clothing not
only ensures their comfort but also prolongs the lifespan of your purchase.
